I have gone on three Black Water Dives with Kona Honu Divers. I went on these Dives with the guy who wrote the book, literally.

A Field Guide to Blackwater Diving in Hawaii by Jeff Milisen

Each of these dives were very different, as the currents and other variables change what will be in the water.

After dark, you get in the boat, they point the boat out to sea and you travel about 6 miles straight out.

They attach ropes to the boat. Then a rope gets attached to you. This rope is attached to the first rope with a ring, so you can swim up and down, then you jump in.

You are in 6,000 feet of dark water. There are so many things floating around, some move fast, some slow, some not at all. Some go towards the light, some not. Many make their own light. Squid come from outa' nowhere and smack you in the chest, and for some reason the groin area.

You can sometimes see sharks, whale sharks, or almost anything, although on these trips the big guys stayed away. Except one of the dives, a spotted dolphin made a quick pass. They sometimes see Cookie Cutter Sharks. These are small, torpedo shaped sharks that like to take little bites out of larger sea animals such as Dolphins, Whales, Game Fish etc. They have been known to take bites out of humans, but that is rare. The bites are a little like someone used a cookie cutter to gouge out a chunk. If a larger shark comes around, and looks a bit aggressive, the dive will be stopped. Fortunately that did not happen on any of my dives.

Some of the small things you see will grow up to be game fish, or crabs, or lobster. Some of the tiny things have even tinier things living on them. It is an amazing environment.

Some of the things can be 30 meters in length. Some will shrink an amazing amount when disturbed. You never know what you will see.

The videos, and the pics taken from them, are not awesome. Taking night-time underwater video with a GoPro and a flashlight is not exactly ideal, especially without a closeup lens. Still, some of the footage was pretty awesome.

The first two pics were taken by someone else on my first trip. Everything else was taken from videos I took.

These can grow to a couple of feet in length.

This rope gets attached to that rope, which gets attached to the boat. Hopefully securely as that rope has a heavy weight on it.
